CPCO Conference 2017

CPCO Conference 2017: what to expect

By Hannah Yakobi

Our annual conference is less than a month away!

This year, the event features an incredible line-up of keynote speakers and several excellent breakout sessions guided by industry leaders.

The Opening Keynote is by Bruce Rodrigues, Deputy Minister of Education. As an exemplary thought leader and role model for humble and merciful leadership in education, he will set the tone for this year’s conference theme: Walking Each Other Home. Recognizing the work that we do as leaders in Catholic Education can be all-consuming — especially in times of “initiative fatigue” — Bruce reminds us of the importance of support, stewardship, accompaniment and encounter, and our commitment to walking each other home. You can read more about his keynote on our website.

As a Principal, you’re likely used to having conversations of all kinds with students and fellow employees, but having to tackle a difficult discussion with a parent is another feat altogether.

I’m sure many Principals can recall a difficult conversation (or two, or three) they’ve had to have with a parent. Maybe the parent was unwilling to listen, maybe they weren’t supportive, maybe they were overly concerned or all around confused. We’ve all been there — in that awkward, difficult-conversation twilight zone, where everything seems to spiral downwards.

Luckily, there are a few ways to make your next difficult conversation a little easier, and it all essentially comes down to improving communication.

CPCO HR Boot Camp 2017: a participant’s note

By Elizabeth Carreiro

CPCO recently held its first HR Boot Camp that ran from July 10 to July 13, 2017. During the event, we asked participants about their thoughts on the Boot Camp, and Elizabeth Carreiro, Principal of St. Hubert Catholic School (Nipissing-Parry Sounds Catholic District School Board), had very kindly shared her feedback with us!

The four-day session was an opportunity for school Principals to listen to a wealth of knowledge on important issues that are fundamental to the role. Thank you, Ron McNamara, Wendy Lopez, Michael Pautler, Iliana Castillo and Jeff Baechler for sharing your knowledge and for navigating us through these issues via a collaborative forum.

In late February 2017, CPCO held its latest Assembly of Member Representatives Meeting in Toronto’s west end.

The event featured an interactive agenda, including a variety of presentations about CPCO’s programs, projects and initiatives. The biggest highlight of the two-day session was a presentation by the Minister of Education, The Honourable Mitzie Hunter.

It was a busy and productive two-day event, with much engagement from all.
